Description
The estates cuvée is a blend comprised of fruit from every single vineyard site that Kiona cultivates. For the 2018 vintage, 76% of the fruit comes from the Red Mountain AVA, and the remainder from the more generalised Columbia valley AVA. The Columbia Valley components bring acid, fruit, and drinkability, while the Red Mountain additions contribute depth, structure, and colour.
The varietal breakdown is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon (which meets the legal threshold to simply label the wine as a Cab Sauv if they so wished), 17% Merlot, and 3% of a grape known in North America as Lemberger, but may be more familiar to you by its old world name: “BlaufrĂ€nkisch”.
The cuvée includes machine-picked and hand-picked components which are fermented in stainless steel tanks (with pumpover) and 1.5 ton open-top fermenters (cap punchdowns). Full malolactic fermentation occurs in-barrel, topped up 6x per year, 35% new-oak equivalent, mixture of French and American.
