Description
Corton “Les Renardes” is a walled 14.3ha vineyard plot within the commune of Aloxe-Corton, in the Côte de Beaune region of northern Burgundy. It is a lieu-dit (named site) of the Corton Grand Cru appellation, exclusively for Pinot Noir. A very small section at the top of the property may also grow Chardonnay, though it falls under the Corton-Charlemagne AOC.
The vineyard site lies high up on the Eastern slopes of the Montagne de Corton hill, and is characterised by pebbly, marlstone soils rich in iron oolite. These reputedly impart the rich, gamey character for which Corton Renardes wines are known.
The section of the vineyard that Thibault Liger-Belair harvests is just 0.3ha, planted in 1956. For the 2016 vintage 956 bottles, 30 magnums and 3 jeroboams were produced.
Vinification:
– Harvesting is manual with 40% of whole clusters.
– 3 weeks of fermentation with very gentle extraction.
– 60% of new oak barrels are used for a period of 22 months.
