Description
Both the region and the grape for this wine are a little obscure, however the flavours of it are anything but: this is about as light, fresh, crisp, and clean as it gets. The minerality is wonderfully balanced, the fruit is muted but still present, and the floral notes make for pleasant accents. It manages to be both a great crowd-pleaser and something interesting to an aficionado.
As for the nitty-gritty, this is made from 35+ year old vines of a grape called Jacquere, which is planted nearly exclusively in the Savoie region that this wine comes from, where it makes up for nearly 3/4 of all grape cultivar. The region is way in the east of France right against the border with Switzerland and just south of Lake Geneva. Clay limestone soils are common here, and just as they do elsewhere, contribute to the aromatic profile of the wine. The region is also quite cool, and as such even fully-ripened grapes only take this to 11.5% in warm years, which keeps the acidity laser-focused.
Domaine Labbe ferments using indigenous yeasts, and vinifies in stainless tanks, with non-certified sustainable farming.
