Description
Pommard is a village in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of the north of Burgundy, famous for producing rich, substantial red wines with powerful aromatics. The Pommard clone is one of the most planted sub-varieties of Pinot Noir in many new-world regions, chiefly in Oregon. It is interesting that Pommard and its immediate neighbor, Volnay (renowned for its smooth, delicate reds), are just 1.3km apart, and yet their wines are so different. In Pommard, the subsoil is made up of fine alluvial river sediment. It is therefore less rich in limestone, making it heavier and more draining; further forcing the vines to delve deeper to meet the water-bed.
The plots that François Mikulski farm are planted with, on average, 25 year old vines. Their annual production is around a mere 1700 bottles, and their vines are cultivated by non-certified organic farming.
The wine is vinified in vats for about 15 days, then put in oak barrels (roughly 20% new) in which it remains for at least 12 months.
