Description

Domaine Bertrand Machard de Gramont created the estate in 1984 after having worked in Chambolle Musigny at Comte de Vogue. Among the small plots they first purchased in Nuits Saint George was the 0.92ha “Aux Allots”, which was already planted with Pinot Noir vines that are now between 60 and 80 years. All of their grapes are harvested by hand with a team of around twenty people, and collected into many small 30kg capacity baskets. The grapes are fully destemmed, and fermented in large wooden tanks for roughly two weeks; both punch-down and pump-over are used to submerge the cap. After primary fermentation, the wine is racked into large 228 litre barrels, of which, the vast majority are used in an effort to keep oak influence to a minimum. They do not re-rack the wine after malolactic fermentation, and keep the wine in-barrel for 18-20 months before blending.

Nuits Saint Georges is the furthest south commune in the Cote de Nuits, and is the second largest of the subregions in the entirety of the Cote d’Or; boasting some 41 Premier Cru climats. The area is known for very powerful wines, with loads of nuance, complexities, and general austerity; these releases from Domaine Machard de Gramont are certainly no exception, though they have had the benefit of around a decade to soften, and develop a plethora of tertiary notes while maturing.
