Description

Torbreck was established in 1994, and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. It is named after a forest situated just south of Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. Though the winery was only established in 1994, the vast majority of the vines that the vintner is charged with caring for are over 100 years old, with some even reaching around 165. These old vines are head-trained in keeping with tradition, and are nearly exclusively dry-farmed (never irrigated). As such, the wines all share a common theme of incredible concentration and complexity that only old vines can provide.

The Old Vines GSM is split 65% Grenache, 25% Shiraz, and 10% Mataro/Mourvedre. It is matured in old French oak barrels, though the length of maturation is subject to change over the vintages; their philosophy being “it takes as long as it takes”. Courtesy of that philosophy, their wines achieve a natural clarity, which negates the need to fine or filter, which is much to the benefit of the bottled product. Their faithful Rhone style recreations bear all the typical hallmark notes that one would expect: plums and red fruits, decaying leaves and forest floor, a touch of pepper and spices, and a gentle acidity to tie it all together.
