Description
Cigales is a little-known region that sits between Ribera del Duero and Toro that was only elevated to D.O. status 1991. Stylistically, it seems to split the difference very nicely betwen Toro’s rustic warmth, and Ribera’s austerity, structure, and overall more “elegant” feel.
CĂ©sar PrĂncipe is without a doubt the most famous producer of the region; helped along in no small part by the first vintage of this wine getting 94pts by Robert Parker. Though the family has been in Cigales for generations, the bones of the modern winery were really only put in place in 1982 by the grandfather of the man now running the estate, Ignacio. His Grandfather and father CĂ©sar finally steered the winery away from bulk production in the 90’s, and never looked back.
Now Ignacio carries on the legacy, entrusted with a wealth of old vines. For this particular label, very old, super low-density plantings between 70-100 years old are used. Though Garnacha is permitted in the region, this one is 100% Tempranillo and is incredibly full-bodied.
The grapes are fully destemmed, cold macerated for two days before fermentation, and macerated post-fermentation for three weeks. It is then aged for 14 months in mostly French oak.
On the nose and palate both you get a good mix of the black fruit and baking spices that you’d expect of a Toro, and the red fruits, coffee, and licorice you often get from Ribera. It’s the best of both worlds!
