Description
Based in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims since 1741, the Clouet family continue to put out quite a handful of minuscule-volume bottlings. Unlike some other growers, they aren’t dogmatic about their approach to winemaking. No “we only ferment in barrel”, no “we always allow/block MLF”. They do whatever suits the cuvĂ©e best.
So to that point, while their entry level release is 95% done in temperature controlled stainless, this “Un Jour de 1911” is fermented entirely in old barrels. They specifically were attempting to emulate some remarkably old bottles dug up deep in their cellar with this bottling, hence the older style foil over the neck of the bottle.
Most remarkably, this blanc de noir spends between 10 and 12.5 years aging on lees. That kind of incredibly lengthy aging seems to be the treatment those old bottles they dug up got, and so too does this.
It is one of the best Champagnes we’ve had. Bouzy Grand Cru pinot noir always has such “muscle” to it, and this is no exception. The fruit, even after so long on lees, asserts itself right up front, before giving way to to all the brioche, heather honey, and almonds; and the finish just never ends.
