Description
Pago Casa Gran is a historic Valencian estate with over 300 years of winemaking heritage, rooted in one of the oldest viticultural landscapes in the Iberian peninsula, having first been planted by the Phoenecians over 2,700 years ago.
Between the 1960s and 1980s, under the direction of Manuela Galbis, the estate evolved from producing bulk wine for the local market to bottling its own wines. In the 1980s, the acquisition of the historic Casa Benasal marked a major expansion and set the foundation for the modern winery.
In 2006, Manuelaâs son, Carlos Laso, founded the Pago Casa Gran as it is now. Carlos proudly credits his motherâs courage and determination, recalling her daily 43km commute on rural roads to tend vines and do cellar work at a time when few women held such roles in Spain. Today, Carlos Laso is recognised as a leader in organic and other natural farming practices in Valencia, continuing the family legacy with a renewed focus on sustainability, and terroir expression.
Where they are, high up in the Les Alcusses valley in the mountains behind Valencia, their wines always show a fresh mineral verve. Their Malvasia sees weekly bâtonnage (lees stirring) for a couple of months to amp up the mouthfeel, and round out the acidity.
Stone fruit and citrus notes absolutely explode out of the glass, with plenty of more tropical fruit notes mixed in there, too. It has little hints of honey and floral tones woven throughout, and a super fun interplay between the weight afforded to it by the bâtonnage and the taut, nervy feeling of the acidity and minerality.
