Description

Schola Sarmenti (school of the vine) from the Salento region of Puglia, the ‘heel of the boot’ so to speak, makes some of our favourite southern Italian wines! Vibrant, balanced, fruit-forward, yet never too jammy/oaky.

The winery is both old and new in a sense. It was founded in 1850, but ended up laying empty for nearly fifty years until the current owners renovated it in 2000. Lorenzo Marra and Alessandro Calabrese (who additionally oversees winemaking) count themselves among a small group of wineries pushing southern Italy’s Puglia region toward more quality-oriented wine production.

The estate has about 200 hectares altogether, most of it older bush vines up to 70ish years old, and much of it planted to primitivo (zinfandel), and negroamaro which is the backbone of their identity.

This wine is a 50/50 split of the aforementioned varieties. The primitivo gives it plenty of plummy/black cherry-esque plush fruit notes, and the negroamaro backs it up with a firm tannin structure and nice spice on the finish.
