Description
Set in the heart of the mountain-ringed Robertson Valley in the Western Cape of South Africa, Springfield Estate is a family-run estate owned by ninth-generation descendants of French Huguenots, who came from the Loire in 1688 with bundles of vines under their arms.
The topsoil of their vineyards is, in most places, incredibly thin. The earth has to broken up in order for the vines to root. For their older vineyards, this was done with dynamite, but even now machinery has to be brought in (and sometimes sacrificed in the process) in order to work their terroir. But what a terroir it is.
Their aptly-named Life from Stone Sauvignon Blanc comes from vineyards of an average vine age between 21-27yrs old planted pretty much straight into quartz rock. As you’d probably expect, the yields are low, even for such a naturally generously cropping variety like sauv blanc.
They give this one 100 days on primary lees which boosts the texture and gives it some real weight. Coupled with the incredible concentration of fruit from the low yields, and the unreal minerality, it is undoubtedly one of the best South African sauv blancs on our market.
