Description
Unico Zelo are at the forefront of a tiny (but growing!) number of producers in Australia that are shifting focus away from French grapes, and planting Italian vines. It’s not that clever vintners working with particular vineyard sites can’t still make a good cab or shiraz, of course they can; but, these grapes need so much water, and even though they love heat, they still have their limits. They don’t work everywhere in the vineyards of Australia like they once did.
So since 2012, these Avant-Gardists with their “unique zeal” (Unico Zelo), have challenged what it means to make Aussie wine. In their desire to be sustainable, they needed grapes that will be okay with minimal irrigation and a warming climate.
They still work with some purchased fruit of French varieties, like with the Grenache component of this rosé here. It mingles with some Sangiovese from Clare Valley, and Dolcetto from Langhorne Creek, and makes a real “belter” as they call it.
Macerated on skins for just 2-4 hours, fermented dry, and rested in stainless tanks for 6 months before bottling. Notes of fresh cranberries, crisp apples, guava, and salted lemon. Texturally delightful, great acidity, and a dry finish with a nice phenolic grip.
