The Vouvray and Montlouis sur Loire twin (yet feuding) towns of the Loire had likewise twin stars, Jacky Blot and Francois Chidaine until 2023 when the former passed away. Now, Francois and a number of avant-garde organic\/biodynamic producers inspired by the two carry on, bringing eyes from all over the world to their home.<\/p>\n
In 2014, the pair were informed that their Vouvray wines would be forcibly declassified to simple Vin de France for having been vinified in their wineries in the town just across the river from Vouvray, in Montlouis. The politics of it all are intricate, but it wouldn’t be entirely wrong to say that the very prim-and-proper, “aristocratic” Vouvray has often looked down on Montlouis, and this was perhaps a way to snub these two “firebrands”.<\/p>\n
At any rate, while Chidaine continues to vinify Vouvray (now on the Vouvray side of the bridge), he makes some absolutely riveting stuff on the Montlouis side, and from the greater Touraine region. Many smaller producers like him seem these days to be concerned with endeavouring to make “small wines” like this. After all, if a person can’t find a solid, well-priced weekday wine from your region, why should they take a leap of faith on your top label stuff?<\/p>\n
This sauvignon blanc comes from plots with clay soils with flint and clay-limestone located in communes of the Cher valley, such as Chissay-en-Touraine and Saint-Julien-de-Ch\u00e9don. The plots are all farmed organically, harvested manually, and the cuv\u00e9e is fermented on indigenous yeast.<\/p>\n
To call it “Sancerre at half the price” would be beating a dead horse, and not quite right. The flavour profile doesn’t quite read Sancerre. It’s leaner, more steely, and more vibrant than opulent. What is fair to say about it compared to Sancerre is that we find it a little more complex than certain entry-level Sancerres, and it sure is more reasonably priced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
