This small town is in a unique location, where the two main soil types of Barolo (Tortonian blue/grey marl and Serravallian sandstone) are stratified together, lending both power and elegance to the wines. In 1967, Alfonso Scavino (son of Lorenzo) took the reins of the estate and bottled the first wines under the Azelia name. Today, Alfonso’s grandson, Luigi, and great-grandson, Lorenzo are the 4th and 5th generations in charge of this family estate. The father and son team continue to apply what they learnt from previous generations, making wines that respect the traditions of their forefathers, while utilising modern techniques to continually improve their quality year-after-year.

Azelia’s vineyard management program under Agronomist Nicola Algamante focuses on integrated pest management, and integrated disease control in the vineyards. The number of treatments is reduced to a minimum, and copper and sulphur-based products are mainly utilised over the array of more chemically intensive sprays available. Soil analysis is carried out every two years, and organic fertilisers are used when needed. They do not till their vineyard rows, opting instead to sow permanent cover crops amidst their vines.

For a lot of Barolo enthusiasts, this is the wine they would choose as the most emblematic representation of the region as a whole.

[358
297
post-20765","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-italy","product_tag-deposit-0-10","entry","first","instock","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple","berocket_lgv_grid","berocket_lgv_list_grid
["GET
