Description

Saint-Bris is a white wine appellation in northern Burgundy based around the town of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux, which is practically right next door to the Chablis region. It is an oddity for Burgundy in the sense that its wines are made only from Sauvignon Blanc and/or Sauvignon Gris, the only two grapes approved in the AOC. The vast majority Burgundian white wines, including those of Chablis just beside it, are based on Chardonnay. From a purely geographical perspective, however, some sense can be made of it; the distance from Saint Bris to the heart of Burgundy in Beaune is about twice as far as it is to Sancerre in the Loire valley, which is also famous for its Sauvignon Blanc. Moreover, its soils more closely resemble those found in the Loire, so the lone Burgundian AOC to be solely dedicated to sauv blanc/gris makes some sense.

Anyhow, on to the wine specs. The vines were planted in 2000 (just 3 years before the AOC was granted), the wine was vinified 100% in stainless steel tanks, and matured on lees for 6-8 months. It tastes exactly how you would think a sancerre and chablis mashup would in your mind: beautiful minerality, with fresh and focused citrusy acidity, yet still quite rounded on the palate.
