Description
Mario Bollag and Athena Tergis Bollag, husband & wife and artists both, continue to knock some incredible wines out of their tiny little split-terroir 12ha organically farmed estate in Montalcino. They have two incredible parcels of vines – Pian Bossolino surrounding the winery/villa, and Fonte Lattaia.
The former is higher in altitude at 1,200 feet asl, and is a touch cooler as you would expect. The soil is a blend of marl, limestone, and metamorphic composites. The fruit from here is what lends their wines their signature aromatic complexity.
The latter is a little lower in altitude at 750 feet, so is warmer already, and has that warmth compounded by being southwest facing, catching every bit of the warm evening sun. The fruit from this site is what gives their wines power and structure.
This supertuscan from them is unique among its peers for being so Cab Franc heavy as opposed to Cab Sauv. It doesn’t have a huge whack of new oak, and it isn’t over extracted…everything about it is “just right”. The Cab Franc lends it Chinon-esque notes of tobacco and herbs, and is all pulled together with the plums, black cherry, and pepper of the Merlot/Syrah. All underpinned by a bit of dried tomato to remind you it’s from Montalcino.
